I’m back!

To quote Leonardo da Vinci: “Art is never finished, only abandoned”.

While I don’t consider my writing to be art, I feel like this quote summarizes the past few years of inactivity on CraftyGirl Creates. I love sharing crafty finds with you, and doing artist interviews so you can see into the mind of some truly awesome and creative souls. The break for the past couple of years was definitely necessary (can you imagine me trying to feed a baby and post at the same time? Total 💩 show, haha) but I’m back, and – I’d like to think – better than ever.

So, what will I be sharing?
– DIY projects
– Interviews with handmade artisans
– My own brand of snarky wit (you’re welcome 😉)
– Recipes (everyone’s gotta eat, and cooking is creative when you have fun with it)
– Handmade items I’ve found that I just have to share.
Let’s get crafty together.
Find me on…

CustomPortraitArt: An Interview with Owner Robin Zebley

One of the things I’ve enjoyed the most about featuring Etsy shops on my blog is getting to know the owners; what inspires them to design? What brought them to open their shop? I’ve started a new series of blog posts specifically for this occasion – owner interviews. I hope you’ll enjoy learning more about these unique artists’ process and inspiration!

For some people, painting comes easy…and for others, like Robin Zebley (owner of Etsy shop CustomPortraitArt), it takes lots of dedication. Already proficient at drawing portraits, Robin wanted to branch out into painting. Her son, a classically trained artist at the Philadelphia Academy of the Fine Arts, came over one afternoon to teach her the basics of painting portraits. With determination, and lots of practice, Robin was able to master the art of portrait painting. “Now, I just love it. My inspiration comes from my customers; their energy and enthusiasm are contagious!”, she says.
https://img1.etsystatic.com/120/0/19021/icm_fullxfull.99061319_bn5ep9gqkd4ckg4ssc8g.jpg
After having sold portraits for a few years by word of mouth, she learned of Etsy while browsing in an artists’ forum. Nervous about her new business endeavor, Robin started off with watercolor and ink miniatures before gaining enough confidence in her art to offer full-sized portraits. When asked what her favorite project has been, Robin confided that she’s had a few celebrity orders – but she’s not telling who! 🙂 One was a celebrity who ordered custom portraits of her family members’ dogs as a Christmas present – Robin says that it’s so fun to see pictures of  that particular celebrity walking her dog in the news.

Another one of Robin’s celebrity orders was from a famous writer, who ordered portraits of his groomsmen painted as 18th century generals. Robin’s husband, John, joined her in making this order possible; he did the initial stages and blocking to help Robin meet her deadline.
One of Robin’s greatest inspirations is artist Chuck Close, who is well known for his massive-scale portraits. “I admire him for his work, of course, but also for his work ethic, his imagination, and his incredibly positive attitude, even after his accident that left him in a wheelchair.”, Robin responds. “And he’s incredibly kind to beginning artists; I know that for a fact.”
You can find Robin at her Etsy shop, CustomPortraitArt, on Twitter, and at her blog!

Support the Arts: Jayme Hunt

Today’s post is a bit of a variation from my usual…but still incredibly crafty. We’ve all heard of crowdfunding websites like GoFundMe, Kickstarter, etc….but have you heard of Patreon? Patreon gives people a chance to support the arts; you can pledge money towards a specific artist to help them buy materials, studio time, etc, in order to improve their art.
Jayme Huntis one of the artists available to be sponsored on Patreon. Jayme specializes in a special process of her own process, quainting. According to Jayme, “I take watercolor paper and paint it Plein Aire style to ensure I get all the colors of the scene I’ve chosen. Then I bring the pages home and cut them all up! I twirl them all up using two toothpicks I’ve glued and taped together (for really). Then I start gluing those, matching the pattern of my scene, on edge to the background piece of watercolor paper. After the glue is dry, I go back over an area and paint the edges of the watercolor paper I just glued down. It’s a long process but the results give a play on light and shadow that just can’t be achieved with just paint alone.”

The image speaks for itself; Jayme’s method adds dimension and detail far surpassing the usual painting. Right now, Jayme has a few supporters, but would love to be able to buy some professional paints and additional supplies. If you’re into supporting the arts, go check out Jayme’s Patreon page – All supporters are entered into a giveaway! You can also find her at JaymeHunt.com
Until next time…stay crafty (and support the arts)!

MyMisi.com – Buy and Sell Handmade! (Sponsored Post)

logo

Handmade, artisan products are getting bigger and better every day. Several marketplaces are available online to buy and sell handmade items, and their popularity is only growing. Today’s post focuses on MyMisi, an online marketplace for buying and selling handmade items such as jewelry, crocheted accessories, and more. “MISI” stands for “Make It, Sell It”, and the folks at MyMisi have made it their mission to bring quality, one of a kind handmade pieces to the online masses. With the success of Misi UK, it was decided to branch into the United States handmade community, and MyMisi was born.

As a buyer, you have wonderful perks: Being able to include your own flair of creativity in custom-made items, learning new crafts with purchased patterns, and being a part of a friendly and active community. You can even search for bargains and deals in their On Sale section!

There are also many perks to being a seller on MyMisi as well, including $0.20 listing fees, a small commission of 3% and listings lasting for 12 months, as opposed to some other sites’ shorter listing times. The best thing of all, in my opinion, is that they have Paypal as one of the payment options…so no matter whether you’re a buyer or a seller, you’ve got the safety of PayPal in your transaction!

Here are some of the items on MyMisi that I found interesting:

Whipped Sugar Scrub
Whipped Sugar Scrub, $10.95

Beautiful Baltic Amber Necklace and Earrings Set
